Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Australia

The Sunshine Coast lies just north of Brisbane, roughly stretching up the coast from Caloundra, just north of Moreton Bay, to Rainbow Beach, north of Noosa.

Less fashionable than the Gold Coast (with the party crowd, anyhow)and more family-oriented, the Coast includes seaside towns such as Redcliffe, Maroochydore and Noosa Heads.

These pictures are mainly from Maroochydore, a pleasant town about an hour to an hour and a half drive from Brisbane.

Getting there from Brisbane is easy, follow the M1 road north to the A1, called Bruce Highway, and keep going.

Lying just off the coast, as you drive up the A1, is Bribie Island, another popular vacation spot and one that can be reached by road bridge.

Near Maroochydore, highway 70, the Sunshine Motorway, branches off from the A1 and follows the coast.

Be sure not to miss the turn, it takes you almost to Noosa Heads before returning to being just 70 again.

Along the Bruce Highway you’ll also see signs for Steve Irwin road. It leads to the Glasshouse Mountains, the town and the national park, and, of course, Australia Zoo, the zoo Steve founded and made world-famous through his Crocodile Hunter TV shows.

Also off the A1, but heading to Nambour this time, is the big pineapple, a popular touring stop for refreshments and, of course, pineapples. This is pineapple farming country.

The big pineapple itself is an example of a particular kind of folk art popular throughout much of the English-speaking world, like the Big Apple and Big Nickel in Ontario, Canada.
